HOW TO: Make a Catastic Kitty-Eared Snood Out of an Old Sweatshirt

Cat-Snood-for-Jasmin-036-(6

My managing editor and friend Jasmin Chua‘s birthday was last month and with the frenzy of fashion week and other assorted fall events, I wasn’t able to give her a proper gift. Jasmin and I are both cat-o-phile’s so I really wanted to make something feline-related and then it dawned on me – cat-ears! I’d been working on sewing this snood for myself and realized that with a bit of alteration, I could pop some kitty ears on it and make it into a fun accessory as well as something that Jasmin could wear while accompanying her uber-cute daughter Zadie trick or treating. Read on for the instructions to make your own cat-ear snood (read this post first to make the actual snood part).

Dolce and Gabbana, Dolce and Gabbana shoes, clossette, second hand clothes, dolce and gabbana heels, thrift shopping, thrift stores,

Sorry if I sound like a broken record but if you still need a reason to try second hand shopping, maybe this will push you over the edge: beautiful, houndstooth leather, made in Italy, like brand new Dolce and Gabbana heels for five dollars. FIVE bucks! When I found these babies at my local thrift shop, I just couldn’t believe how pristine they were, and check out the funky cutouts on the sides of the shoes, too. To think, if you bought these at the D&G store, they’d run upwards of 300 smackers, and here they were at a second hand shop for 1/60th the price just because someone didn’t want them anymore. Isn’t the world strange sometimes?

Have an unbelievable thrift shop find you want to share with other Clossette readers? Submit it here and we’ll take a look!

Have you ever gone last-minute shoe shopping for a special event like a wedding, a date or a vacation because you felt that you simply did not own a pair of shoes that would be suitable for the occasion? I have, and over a hundred pairs of shoes later, I realized that I really didn’t need that many shoes – no one on earth does. But what was making me feel that I did?

A little “sole”-searching (I’m sorry for going there) led to an understanding of my behavior patterns and a solution that seems to be working for me. The main problem was that my mental inventory of what kinds of shoes I already owned was very foggy because many of my shoes were stored away in boxes and I just couldn’t recall that I even had them. The issue is very similar to the one that we tackled with the fridge triage box – if you can readily see what you have, you can use it to its fullest potential. But unlike with food, it’s not like I could just pile all of my shoes in one giant box; well, I could, that would drive an organization freak like myself bonkers. So I decided on the next best thing – a Pinterest shoe board collection showing all of my shoes right at my toetips! This simple idea is saving me a ton of time getting ready because there’s no need to rifle through all of your shoeboxes searching for a pair that will match your outfit, and it also saves you from needlessly buying yet another pair of silver, strappy sandals because you forgot that you already own 3 of them. If you are an avid Pinner, you probably already know how to create such a board, but just in case you’re not, read on to see how you can create your own money-saving, time-saving, waste-saving Pinterest shoe collection.

6 Item Fashion Diet Day 1, fashion diet, diy fashion, fashion diy, yuka yoneda, clossette, second hand clothing, 6 items challenge, six items challenge, anti consumerism, sustainable fashion, slow fashion, fast fashion,

I’m officially on a diet! If you think that’s pretty uncharacteristic of me, hear me out. For this diet, I’ll be counting clothes instead of calories. For the whole month of July, I’ve pledged to wear only 6 items of clothing to show that true style isn’t about having more clothes; it’s about having a curated closetful of quality garments – and knowing how to make a little go a long way. Follow me and my fellow fashion dieters as we challenge ourselves to mix and match our 6 items and get creative to craft 30 different outfits using our limited garb.

So why are we paring down our wardrobes like this? The 6 Items Style Challenge was started by Labour Behind the Label, a campaign that supports garment workers’ efforts worldwide to improve their working conditions through awareness. Most people don’t know how little these women, men and in many cases children get paid so that you can buy a skirt for $12 or a shirt for $10, but if you’re reading this, I hope the one thing you take away is that our desire for cheap, fast fashion is hurting people around the globe. Although having just 6 items to wear might be on the extreme side, the point of this exercise is to show that it can be done and also hopefully will make people see that we simply don’t need that many new clothes!

Check out my very first outfit below and if you’re interested in learning more about the cause, read an interview about why I decided to take on the 6 Items Challenge here.

Fluorescent Green Fluoro Bag by Cambridge Satchel Company

After much soul searching, I’ve decided to finally sell my beloved green Fluoro bag by the Cambridge Satchel Company. I was obsessed with it for quite some time but it’s such a special bag that I feel like it belongs with a person who will actually wear it out and show it off more than once a month. I love the rarity (Cambridge Satchel bags are lovingly handmade in the UK and can take up to 30 days to craft and ship out) and of course the wild color, but as most of my friends know, I just prefer petite bags. This green Fluoro is in near perfect condition and once it’s in your hands, you will see why these bags cost so darn much – they’re worth it! I hope the pics are big enough for you to see all of the details but if you’d like more photos, please comment on the post and I will be happy to send some to you.

Speaking of the photos, I’d like to express my warm gratitude to lensman extraordinaire William Chang for inviting me along for a fun day of photography. Check out some of the shots taken by Will and Wei Chang in the gallery below.

Please excuse my Ashy Larry legs and beaten up TOMS wedges.

I’ve been rocking the black lace up leggings I got in Japan last summer for the past few days and noticed they’ve been creating quite a buzz – not necessarily all positive. Some people are intrigued by them, some baffled and a few girls have asked me where they can get a pair. Good question! I haven’t seen them outside of Japan – has anyone else? I guess like just about anything else in the world, they can probably be found on eBay, but if you want to refashion a pair of your old leggings and give them a little facelift, turning them into a pair of lace ups is the perfect beginner’s fashion DIY project.

YOU WILL NEED:

– pair of old leggings (3/4 length works best since part of your leg should be exposed to show the ribbon)
– long ribbons (I used two different kinds here to illustrate the crazy combos you can create but feel free to just use black leggings and black ribbon or whatever colors you like)
– scissors
– needle and thread
– pins
