Outfit Idea: Polo Girl, outfit ideas, what to wear, fashion, diy fashion, street style, fashion ideas, clossette, polo, ralph lauren, denim shirt, spring outfits,

Anyone else out there a ride-or-die Polo (the brand, not the sport) fan? I’ve been through a lot of fashion phases in my life, but those little ponies will forever have a place in my closet, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Take this Ralph Lauren boys denim button-down for instance. IMHO, classic, easy pieces like this will never go out of style because you can just throw them on and instantly look presentable.

Going back to what I said about fashion phases, I actually went through a very strict “only buy eco-friendly brands” period, and if anyone else is getting into that, more power to you. But I do think it’s important to point out that some labels that tout themselves as sustainable are made of green materials but unfortunately aren’t made to last. On the other hand, they might be very durable but downright ugly. Why shell out money for something that’s going to fall apart or that you’re ashamed to be seen in even if it is eco? Just because something is labeled “organic” or “recycled” may not mean it’s actually sustainable in the truest sense of the word.

Outfit details:

  • Denim button-down: Polo boys shirt purchased at Tanger Outlets when I was in college
  • Navy corduroy bell bottoms: purchased secondhand on eBay
  • Plaid purse: Rugby by Ralph Lauren
  • Pink suede ribbon-tie sandals: by Nine West

That being said, I still don’t usually purchase new clothes because I’m a thrift shopping junkie, but I actually would make an exception to buy something timeless and quality like the Ralph Lauren clothes I’ve collected over the years. The plaid Rugby bag that I’m wearing in this outfit idea is probably the last thing I ever bought from a Ralph Lauren line because I just assumed that the company was too huge to truly care about ethical practices. But now I’m beginning to think that was a bit of a hasty decision. While the company only scores 39 out of a possible 100 on CSRHub (Nike scores 59), they are active when it comes to corporate social responsibility with initiatives like the the Pink Pony Campaign, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, the Polo Fashion School, and partnerships with the American Heroes Fund, Habitat for Humanity, and Hope Help & Relief Haiti. They also take steps to eradicate slavery and human trafficking from their supply chain as outlined on their website here. I would need to research more to see how many of their causes are greenwashing and how much they really adhere to their ethical practices policies, but it does seem like they are trying. On the other hand, the fact that they haven’t jumped on the eco-bandwagon by launching tons of organic and recycled products to fanfare makes me admire them all the more.

Does anyone have any more information on other sustainability initiatives at Ralph Lauren? If so, please share in the comments below.

This silky black Caroline Hedaya dress looks darling from the front but it’s daring and sheer in the back. I purchased this dress for $245 but it’s too small for me now (darn you, doughnuts!) so my (weight) gain is your gain!

The dress measures 17″ across the bust, 13.5″ across the waist and is flared at the bottom. It’s got some signs of wear (seams are a little stretched from me trying to squeeze into it – see pic below), but overall it looks amazing and lovely. Perfect with a string of pearls!

Sneak Peek: CARRIE PARRY Fall Winter 2012 Collection Lookbook

carrie parry, carrie freiman, kestrel jenkins, yuka yoneda, amanda coen, clossette, closette, eco fashion, green fashion, sustainable fashion, the self portrait project,

You’d think that Brooklyn-based fashion designer Carrie Freiman would have stopped by Disney World or something after taking home the gold at Amsterdam Fashion Week’s Green Fashion Competition but being the trooper that she is, she came straight back to Bushwick to shoot the lookbook for the Carry Parry Fall/Winter 2012 collection. In typical Carrie Parry style, the colorful caboodle of clothes was totally wearable, very refined and all of the fabrics were sourced sustainably. Carrie wanted the looks – which range from super saturated orange and magenta color-blocked tops to easy-breezy one-piece dresses in beautiful prints – to be modeled by real women, and I went to excitement level 3,000 when she asked me to be one of them!

The whole lookbook hasn’t been released yet but check out this sampling of all of the vibrant shots of some really cool NYC ladies modeling Carrie Parry FW 2012. The photos were taken at Running Rebel Studios in Bushwick in collaboration with The Self-Portrait Project, and the whole experience was a blast. I think Carrie purposely put us all in skyhigh heels so we wouldn’t run off wearing her amazing clothes!

Shoutout to Kestrel Jenkins who always manages to stay stylish herself while styling others and Amanda Coen, whose amazing jumping photo skills could never be matched.

See more about the collection at Green House of Fashion.

I was giggling with glee this afternoon when the Herve Leger dress that I purchased from Paula Abdul’s closet arrived, but before I get into how/where I got it (what you really care about), I just want to take a few sentences to talk about how that relates to my passion for preloved clothing. If you’re reading Clossette you probably know that this site all about taking fashion into your own hands, hunting for secondhand and vintage pieces you love instead of fast fashion you’ll throw away and using fashion for good instead of evil. But I know that shopping at thrift shops and wearing stuff that other people already did hardly seems glamorous, which is why I think a lot of my friends don’t do it. That’s why I’m really excited to see more celebs selling their own used clothing online and giving more people a reason to try out buying secondhand. Not only are the pieces usually like new, but they’re deeply discounted too. If I’d bought this Herve Leger dress brand new at a store, it would have been more than $1,000! Instead I bought it for just $144, it’s practically new and what’s more, it was worn by Paula Abdul! So if you’re reading this and thinking, hmm, I want to pay much less for something designer that was worn by a celebrity, I really urge you to consider getting into secondhand shopping. It’s true that most of the time, the things you find weren’t worn by celebrities but you’ll find amazing deals on stuff you would never be able to afford otherwise (at least not on a writer’s salary like mine).

Anyhoo, read on for the deets of where I scooped up my beautiful new Herve Leger (my very first one!) or read my interview with Paula Abdul about how she feels about vintage fashion here.

Quick Fashion Fix: Wear Your Clothes Backwards!, quick fashion fix, fashion fixes, how to wear your shirt backwards, backwards shirt, backwards fashion, clossette, closette, how to fix your clothes, diy fashion

Have you ever purchased a top or dress because you loved the print or fabric, only to realize that it was too low-cut or that the shape was unflattering when you brought it home? That was the issue we faced when Ruth brought this lovely watercolor print shirt to our last swap party. Everyone loved the print and the drape of the fabric, but the dashiki-like cut paired with the super low slit at the bosom was kind of strange. You might know that at Clossette, we’re in the business of repairing and refashioning preloved clothes and making them desirable again, so I played with the idea of sewing the slit in the front up or hemming the sides of the top for a more slim fit, but then it donned on me – why not just wear the shirt backwards? There is a really pretty lace inset that’s meant to sit at the back of the shoulders that could get a lot more attention in the front of the shirt, and this quick fix required zero sewing! Click the […] below to see how the shirt looked after we simply put it on backwards and tell us in the comments if you’ve ever employed this DIY quick fix on your own wardrobe instead of just throwing a garment away.

You probably know Paula Abdul for her unforgettable pop hits (Opposites Attract is my personal fave) or for being one of the “nice” judges on American Idol and X Factor, but did you know that she’s also a vintage fashion aficionado? I recently got the chance to ask Paula if she would straight up now tell me why she loves vintage fashion and donating her preloved clothing instead of throwing it away. Read on to see what she said and get a peek at the adorable silk and cotton Abaeté dress I purchased right from her closet through one of my favorite new collaborative consumption sites, TheRealReal.
