If you happen to see any stray copies of the December Vogue left on newstands, pick it up because there’s something in there that you want – a super chic black and gold Chanel holiday card emblazoned with the #5 on the front and “A drop of No 5 and nothing else” scribed on the inside. But that’s not all. The intricate card is also strung with 5 delicate strands of gilded Chanel sequins in the shapes of perfume bottles, snowflakes and CCs. Of course the card is lovely to look at just as it is, but I know what I was thinking as soon as I opened mine up – DIY time! Read on to see how I transformed a few rows of the sequins into a glamorous Chanel charm bracelet.

Even though I’m the kind of woman who would pull a splinter out of my finger and save it for a later project, I’m also a clutterphobe who lives in a tiny 500 sq. ft apartment with limited storage space. That’s why, while I’m ashamed to admit it, I actually thought about discarding the tiny bits of navy silk I had leftover from my Chanel scarf refashion. But then I thought – are you mad, woman?! That scarf cost me a small fortune, so throwing those pieces out would be like throwing away dollar bills. For weeks, I tried to think of a little accessory that would do the lovely gold logo-emblazoned fabric justice and I think I finally found it my newest creation – this tiny glass bottle pendant. The bottle charm can actually be uncorked, which is how I filled it with a circle of the silk and a handful of tiny opalescent beads. This would be a cute way to display any other meaningful bits and baubles you might have that are too small to make into anything else. Enjoy!

Do you have a razor-sharp, witty personality you want to show off? Our adorable mini scissor charm is the perfect way to do just that! Part of Clossette’s “Use Your Own Chain” line of charms, this tiny pair of shears is a great conversation starter and comes in your choice of either gold colored metal or silver colored metal.

While the charm itself isn’t made of recycled metals, it does encourage you to use your own chain (since it doesn’t come with one). After all, if you already own a chain you like, why would you need another? Follow our motto – “use your brain – reuse your chain!” Just pop this charm onto the chain you already own and you can even mix and match charms with ones you already have or our other cute choices here and here.

Note: Charm is not real gold or silver and does not function as a real scissor (that would be dangerous!)

You may have seen celebs rockin’ sassy tassel necklaces on the runways, and for good reason. They’re elegant, easy to throw on and totally in tune with the swinging 70s trend for this spring.

This particular tassel necklace has special significance because it is made from a very special silver grey tassel. During my F.I.T. days, the famous french perfumery Caron held a competition to design their storefront window for the annual Bridal march down Madison Avenue, and boy were my friends and I amazed when we found out our concept took first prize! Not really knowing what the heck we were doing (were we actually putting together a store window on Madison Ave.?! we wondered), we toiled for days perfecting everything in our window until it was exactly the vignette of romance we imagined it to be. On opening night, Caron held a cocktail reception honoring the new window and I still remember the feeling of getting a goodie bag (I’d never gotten one at a fancy party before!) and reaching in to find, amongst other trinkets, this silky tassel. So that I would never forget that feeling, I slipped a chain through it and wore it around my neck – and it still smells like Caron‘s signature scent.

Clossette Silver Grey Perfumed Tassle Necklace
Our winning Caron window. It was a vision of a bride and groom gazing into separate mirrors getting ready for their big day – while at the same time staring into one another’s eyes. Not bad for a couple of kids, eh?

HOW TO: Make a Barbie Doll Shoe Necklace

When I was a little girl, I used to love playing with my Likka-chan doll (a.k.a. Japanese Barbie), until I grew into a LEGO phase and kind of tossed her aside. I hadn’t thought of Licca for years until I was looking through my drawers and found this tiny pink shoe. I don’t remember if the shoe belonged to my doll (I have a vague memory of my sister giving it to me), but it reminded me of the kind of sensible footwear that Licca owned. I always thought it was interesting that unlike Barbie, Licca was small breasted and larger-footed with a much more anatomically correct frame. And though Licca comes in blonde versions too, my Licca was brunette and looked a lot more like me than Barbie ever would.

Anyways sorry for making you read all of this – I’ll get to the point now, which is basically that this little shoe gave me a little peek back into my childhood when all was right in the world and that’s why I wanted to cherish it and keep it close to me by turning it into a necklace. The steps are really easy and if perhaps you have a lone doll shoe that you want to turn into something you can wear as an adult or want to make one of these for a little girl – or boy for that matter! – read on for the instructions.

As a writer for a sustainable design website I get to look at cool solar powered bags all the time, but because I’m a writer, I’m also too poor to afford most of them (cruel irony!). But then I thought hey, what is a solar bag really than a nice purse, backpack or tote with a solar panel attached? I could probably whip one up using a bag I already have myself, no? So that’s exactly what I did, and so can you. Read on for the DIY instructions.

How to Refashion a Regular Top into a Conversation Starting Crazy Cat Lady Shirt

People will be asking you about your cats everywhere you go! TIP: Button up your cardigan or jacket if you feel like being left alone.

second hand clothing, closette, clossette, green fashion, re-made, recycled clothes, refashioned clothes, remade, remade clothes, yukas closet, cat lady shirt, cat lady top, ask me about my cats top, diy fashion

My name is Yuka and I’m a cat-a-holic.

Now that you know that about me, I’m sure you’ll understand why I was instantly overcome with acute kitten print envy pains when I spied DJ Harley Viera Newton (and her delightful kitty Marmite)’s to-die-for collection of Miu Miu meow meow accessories over on the Coveteur. A quick check on eBay for similar trinkets proved unfruitful (though I did find these AH-mazing Miu Miu cat print clogs – sadly not in my size and way too expensive), so I decided to take matters into my own hands. The end result was this “Ask Me About My Cats” shirt that I made using some photos of my cats Cleocatra, Conan and Stinky, some iron-on transfer paper and an old thrifted tank top. If you want to make your own crazy cat lady shirt, just click through my gallery to see the DIY steps.

Yuka

Having received several comments remarking on the fact that the Eat Your Heart Out dress looks weird or confusing just lying on a bed – duly noted people! – I decided to showcase it on an actual person. Apologies in advance for the fact that that person is me. On that note, anyone lookin’ for a modeling gig that pays zero dollars?

Totally unrelated topic, but also totally post-worthy, we finally checked out the rooftop bar at the Ravel Hotel in LIC. Despite the rather awful, and I mean terrible, reviews, I actually had a great time and the views are unlike any I’ve ever seen from this side of the river. As you can see from the photos below, you’re literally RIGHT under the 59th St., Queensborough, Ed Koch, whatever you wanna call it, bridge, and there’s a futuristic retractable roof that makes the space really unique. Plus it’s right next to a simply breathtaking ivy-covered brick building that I’m totally going to write up for Inhabitat NYC. The food? Meh. But who is really going here for the food anyways? I definitely recommend it for an engagement party – the prices are (ever so slightly) more reasonable than a city rooftop bar and it’s just nice to be off the beaten path, you know?

After three trips to Vegas, countless days stomping all over Manhattan and at least 50 happy hours (from what I can fuzzily recall), my favorite pair of heels wasn’t looking so hot – unless you like that filthy, “a bum used it as a pillow” look. Despite the abuse, I definitely didn’t want to throw them out, so I decided to give them a little makeover. At first, I decided to just add a dainty piece of lace to the toes to spruce things up, but when the “glue” that I was using turned out to be glow in the dark paint, I was in for a pleasant surprise! Click through the page numbers below to see how you can a.) revamp your own heels using lace, b.) revamp your own heels by making them glow in the dark or c.) all of the above. They might not be hurricane proof but they’d match perfectly with Halston’s glow in the dark sequin dress, and won’t set you back $4K.
